This book is a “must have” reference book for local historians and genealogists interested in researching their Lakeville ancestors (Middleborough ancestors prior to 1853). It is the most comprehensive book available today on the gravestones found in the thirty-one known cemeteries in the Town of Lakeville. All stones present in the town through the year 2003, the 150th anniversary of Lakeville, are transcribed. Cemetery locations are identified on a town map. Each cemetery has its own chapter. Within each chapter, the names from the gravestones are listed alphabetically as they are spelled on the gravestones. The entire epitaph is recorded word for word for each gravestone. Discrepancies and spelling mistakes in the inscriptions are recorded as is and noted. Descriptions of carvings are given. Gravestone locations are indexed and mapped. The photographs included depict the variety of stones in Lakeville and provide close-up views of detailed features such as carvings, unique lettering, sculptor signatures, and even the sculptor’s fee carved in the stone. Also included are references to cemetery research by previous authors, and vital records. Appendices contain information about additional unconfirmed cemeteries in the town; other gravestone-like markers found at various locations throughout the town; cemetery locations by assessor’s plot number and by Global Positioning System coordinates; names and addresses of the monument companies on the metal tags of the more recent monuments; and gravestones that are inscribed with their sculptor’s name.
